The William Fletcher Residency in Rome

A biennial Scholarship open to emerging visual artists, supported by a bequest from the late M. Matheson Lines

The 2011 winner Kevin Mackay was announced on Saturday 11 September 2010 and he enjoyed his Residency at the BSR during April to June 2012 (see his Rome Diary)

Applications for the 2013 Residency will be sought in April 2012 - watch this space !

The Foundation had invited applications for a valuable travelling art scholarship to be awarded for the first time in 2011 and thereafter every two years.

The scholarship comprises a three month residency at the British School at Rome, which is situated in the heart of the city, near the Museo Borghese and the Italian National Gallery of Modern Art.

It includes $A4,000 for airfares and health & travel insurance, and a monthly stipend of $A2,000.

The scholar will be required to contribute to the 'end of term' Exhibition at the BSR, and the entry fee will be paid by the Foundation (worth about $A1,500).

Murdoch (Nick) Matheson Lines was a friend and supporter of William Fletcher.

Nick purchased several of Bill's paintings and displayed them in his home at Mosman, where he was a medical practitioner.
After Nick died in 2005, several charities benefited from his generous bequests.
Thanks to David Lenehan, Thomas Lyons and Dr Fraser Young for photos of Nick.

Location of BSR and Attractions nearby

Italy's National Gallery of Modern Art is a stone's throw south from the BSR. The Villa Giulia, famous for its Etruscan treasures, is close by to the west. The Zoological gardens and Biopark are adjacent to the east. The Borghese Museum and Gallery is a pleasant walk across the Borghese Gardens (once the vineyard of Scipione Borghese, cardinal nephew of Pope Paul V). The Villa Medici on the Pincian Hill, in the SW corner of the Gardens, gives marvellous views of Rome. The Porta Pinciana leads into Via Vittorio Veneto.

The tram (T) provides ready access to other parts of Rome, as does the Metro (M). From Flaminio, on Metro Linea A, Spagna (Spanish Steps) is one stop east and Repubblica (Diocletian's Baths) two further; St Peter's and the Vatican Museums are two stops to the west across the Tiber.

From the Piazza del Populo, there are fascinating walks into the centre of the city. For a brief idea of three such walks click here.

This bird's eye view by architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, (c 1912) is now out of date but it gives some idea of the extent of the BSR, with fellows' accommodation in the wing at the back of the complex.

Accommodation at BSR

The WF Residency Fellow will have exclusive use of an artist’s studio at the BSR, with loft sleeping-quarters and ensuite bathroom, and be supplied with most meals.

For a more modern view, go to the website and take the virtual tour with 360 degree views in each location. Of special interest may be the studios I & II

Studio location

Facilities at the BSR are most suitable for artists involved in painting and drawing, including illustrators. For sculptors and printmakers, we provide the following recent advice from the BSR (16/03/2010):

"Sculptors may be able to work in wax and plaster in their studios (several people have done so lately). However our workshop is very small and basic and there is no way, space-wise and finance-wise, we can provide art school-level facilities.

Regarding printmaking, we still have the old woodblock press that can be (and has been) used for etching, but we do not have any silkscreening materials or facilities.

It has proven extremely difficult to provide access for our residents to external facilities, because facilities at institutions such as other foreign academies or Rome honour programmes of American art colleges are constantly in use by their residents and students."

Other Facilities at the BSR include an extensive library to the left of the entrance, a pleasant dining room and lounge with TV and video to the right. The central cortile is used for dining on some occasions.

(See these on the BSR virtual tour)

This GoogleMap close-up shows the tennis courts and the rooftop area for sunbaking, to the right of the building. To the left is a garden area for barbecues and perhaps croquet! Wi-fi access is available within the BSR.
